How to animate old photos with AI
A small, believable camera move can make a family portrait or travel memory feel present again. Live.AI turns a still image into a short motion clip and pairs it with the original cover as a native Live Photo.
Choose the right source photo
Start with the highest-resolution scan or phone copy you have. A forward-facing portrait, a landscape with depth, or a photo with a clear foreground subject is easier to animate than a very blurry or heavily cropped image. If a photo contains private people, only upload it when you have permission to use it.
A gentle workflow for memories
- Import the photo. Use a cleaned-up scan or the original image. You do not need to create a video first.
- Keep the motion subtle. Try a slow push-in, a small pan, or a light parallax effect. Avoid asking faces to turn sharply when the source is low resolution.
- Preview before saving. AI results vary with the source image and selected settings. Regenerate with a different movement if the first result feels too strong.
- Save the finished Live Photo. The paired output can be pressed and held in Photos. Save finished cloud results promptly according to the app's current retention notice.
Prompt examples
Short prompts are usually easier to control:
- “Slow cinematic push-in, gentle breeze, keep the face natural.”
- “Subtle parallax between the subject and the background, no sudden motion.”
- “Very slow pan across the landscape, preserve the original colors.”
Questions about animating old photos
Will the original photo be changed?
The source still is used as the cover image. The generated motion is paired with it so the saved asset remains a Live Photo in Photos.
Can I process a family album in one go?
You can select up to nine photos in a batch and use shared settings, then review each result before saving.
Is this the same as a face-swap or deepfake?
No. The workflow is intended to add camera or environmental motion to a source image. Results can vary, so review every generated clip before sharing.
